Jamie lay on the bed in her hotel room, reading and re-reading the letter. It was nearly 3 a.m.

It had been in the parcel hidden beneath the floorboards at the cabin. Along with her father’s stag-horn-handled hunting knife, his family ring, his badge, the deed to their house, and a photograph of her father holding Jamie as a newborn baby at the hospital. He was grinning.

Jamie sniffed back fresh tears, wiped the ones already at the corners of her eyes roughly from her cheeks, and then rolled over onto her side.

She stared down at the collection of items on the bed in front of her, and pulled her knees up so that they were cradled, protected. She laid the letter down and picked up the gold ring, pushing it onto her thumb – the only finger it remotely fit, and rolled it slowly around.

Jamie closed her eyes then, and let out a long, slow breath. This time, she didn’t wipe away the tears. She just let them fall.

And slowly, but surely, let sleep come for her.
