Her body was still warm when he carried her into the woods.
His feet crunched in the fresh snow, the cold night air frosting his laboured breath. It caught the moonlight, glowing silver in the shafts that splintered through the trees.
He slowed. She was growing heavy, limp in his arms. Her lips were already turning blue, her skin taking on that deathly shade of pale.
This wasn’t going to be easy.
Nothing about this was easy.
But it had to be done. It had to be.
He set her on the ground carefully, the snow soaking through the knees of his trousers, numbing him. He paused, looking down into her eyes.
For a moment, they stayed like that. And then he reached to his belt and pulled free the freshly sharpened hatchet tucked there with trembling fingers.
The numbers on his watch glowed in the dark. A little after midnight.
Dawn was still a long way off, but there was lots of work to do.
And time was running out.
